Upgrading Windows 95 to Windows 98
Windows 95 users can upgrade to Windows 98 for added features and
usability. The upgrade process is quite simple. If previous settings
are to be retained, such as background and user files, then the
Windows 98 setup program must be run from within Windows 95.
Typically, inserting the Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive
will initiate the setup program. However, if the program needs to
be started manually, navigate to the CD-ROM drive using Windows
Explorer and double-click the Setup.exe file on the root of the
Installation CD. This should start the Setup program, which will
guide users through the installation process.
Even though the upgrade may go smoothly, there may be problems
with the upgraded Windows 98. If the user does not need to retain
any information or settings on their computer, the best way is to
start with a clean installation. Erasing everything is not always
recommended due to the severity of it. However, if the user backs
up all of their data prior to installing a new operating system,
they will be able to retrieve any data they have saved as well as
have a clean install.
Upgrading Windows 98 to Windows ME
The upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows ME is simple and very
straightforward. The upgrade may be started from within Windows 98 by
using the installation CD auto-play feature, or by manually running
Setup.exe. Once the
setup program has begun, the onscreen prompts and instructions
guide the user through the upgrade. A Windows ME upgrade can be
uninstalled only once on the same system.
