5.1 The Windows 9x File Structure and File Management System
5.1.3 Using a text editing application to create a file (document)
In this section, files are created in Windows using WordPad or Notepad. Using WordPad, for example, a document can be created by typing in the steps needed to wash a car. The document can be saved in Rich Text Format (RTF) to the Desktop by selecting Save or Save As from the File menu and giving the name "Car Wash Steps.doc". Additionally, the file can be changed from the RTF format to the Word for Windows format by clicking on the Save As option from the File menu. Clicking on the Save As type:, click the down arrow, click on the Word for Windows option, and click on the Save button.

Now, Windows Explorer can be opened. In the left pane, click on the Desktop. Desktop items will display in the right pane. To view the full name of the file, as in Figure , move the cursor to the File Properties Bar between Name and Size. Note the double-headed arrow appears. Double click between Name and Size. The file name region will self adjust displaying the full name of every file.

Move the Car Wash Steps.doc to the Projects folder using one of the following methods. On the desktop, click and hold the mouse button down while dragging the file over to the Projects folder. It becomes semi-transparent until it disappears into the folder. In Windows Explorer, the file can also be dragged to the folder. Thirdly, the file can be cut and pasted to the Projects folder. Right-click on the file, and from the menu that appears select Cut. Move the cursor to the Projects folder, right-click and select Paste from the menu. The results are shown in Figure .
