When cleaning an inkjet printer, the most obvious spot that will need to be cleaned is the paper handling mechanism. Over time, as paper passes through, particles of paper build up. This can be removed with a damp cloth when the unit is unplugged.

Laser printers are usually low maintenance unless they are in a dusty area or are older units. There are two things to remember when cleaning a laser printer. First, to clean a toner mess, use the right vacuum cleaner. If a household vacuum cleaner is used to clean toner, the particles will fly through the filtration system and into the air, thus creating a larger mess. Second, as always, unplug the unit before cleaning it due to the high amounts of voltage within the laser printer.

The printer will either not work or malfunction by lowering the print quality if the wrong type of ink is installed. Trying to refill the ink cartridges is not a good idea since the ink can leak out. Always buy the vendor recommended ink cartridges.
