10.3.4 Keyboard
Keyboards take the most abuse of any of the components that make up a computer system. They are also open to the environment, which allows dust to build up on the circuit board over time. Periodic cleaning of the keyboard will prolong the lifespan and prevent malfunction. The keys on a keyboard can be removed, which allows easy access to the areas where dust collects. A soft brush or cotton swab can be used to remove dirt from below the keys. Use compressed air to blow out dust from below the keys. However, it is necessary to hold the keyboard vertically or in an inclined position and blow the blasts of air across so the dirt and dust is knocked off and out of the keyboard. Otherwise, larger dirt or dust particles will come off and lodge at the interior corners or other obstacles associated with the springs or foam material that controls the keyboard keys.
