10.2 Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
10.2.3 Creating an ESD-free environment
In order to avoid ESD, it helps to know the conditions in which it is most likely to occur. When the humidity is low, the potential for ESD increases dramatically. Also, if the temperature is cool or if there is carpeting on the floor, the potential for static electricity is higher.

A few key elements to include in a good working area should be anti-static tile on the floors, grounded workbenches with anti-static mats, and wrist straps. The area should be clean and well lit. It should have a climate control system that raises the relative humidity above 50 percent. If all of these elements are in place, the risk of ESD will be significantly reduced. Students should use Figure to test their knowledge about conditions that can cause a static buildup.

Once the computer case has been opened, the technician should be grounded to the case by touching an exposed part of the computer case. If just a painted part of the case is touched, it may not release any static buildup. Once any static buildup has been discharged onto the exposed case, make sure to attach the grounding wrist strap to the case to help prevent any more buildup.

An ESD free environment is crucial to preventive maintenance that involves opening the computer case.
