Slovakia lies in the heart of Europe. The neighboring countries are Poland in the north, Ukraine in the east, Hungary in the south, Austria in the south-west and the Czech Republic in the west. The capital is Bratislava. The most famous tourist center in our country are the High Tatras, where winter competitions take place. Foreign tourists are especially attracted by a great number of spas, from which Piestany is the world-known. Our rich history is also represented by many castles and manor houses. Some of them were reconstructed and they are museums now.

The town of Michalovce is in the eastern part of Slovakia. It is not far from another known city in our republic Kosice, which is known by developed steel industry. 40,000 inhabitants live here now. The only river which flows through this place is called the Laborec. In the town there are plenty of institutes and specialized organizations of agricultural character, including the five food-stuff plants, engineering industry, electrotechnical industry, textile industry, ceramical industry, building industry and various other manufacturing companies.

For recreation in the area of the town there is the forest park of Biela Hora, the lake at Vinne and another one called Morske Oko ("Sea's Eye"), but above all the extensive "inland" sea Zemplinska Sirava with its five recreation and leisure resorts. Although Michalovce is not known by many people, it is very close to our hearts.
